Behind the Layouts
Naim Shah
Owner & Craftsman | Certified MTH Service Tech
Master Layout Designer & Train Repair Specialist
Naim’s passion for trains began in childhood, inspired by the Lionel catalogues of the mid-1950s. On Christmas morning in 1957, he received his first Lionel train set and soon built layouts on the living room floor, later moving to the attic as his projects became more complex. In 1980, he built his first layout for a client, marking the start of a lifelong career designing and constructing custom train layouts, installing advanced digital systems, and servicing trains.
For more than 40 years, Naim has created layouts admired for their craftsmanship, reliability, and precision. His client list spans across California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Texas.. A specialist in period pieces, collectible trains, and digital systems such as Lionel TMCC and MTH DCS, he combines creativity with technical mastery, earning recognition in national train magazines.
Payton Shah
Associate Designer & Technician
Next-Generation Layout Designer & Technical Specialist
Payton’s love for trains began before he could walk, when he received his first MTH Virginia & Truckee train set. On his first birthday, he received his first Thomas the Tank Engine wooden train, followed by the Lionel Historical Boys Train Set that Christmas. He spent his childhood collecting Thomas trains, building layouts throughout the house, and helping his father in the shop as layouts were built and trains repaired.
By age six, Payton built his first N-scale layout, and by twelve, he had created a detailed narrow-gauge model layout inspired by the Denver & Rio Grande. Since 2019, he has brought creativity and technical expertise to the business, blending modern technology with the craftsmanship he learned from his father – carrying the family’s model railroading legacy into the next generation.
